Beard restoration is relatively new technique that restores facial hairs – beard, moustache, goatee and sideburns. This procedure enables to bring more density to existing beard, fill patches or cover facial scars. Facial hair loss can be genetic, due to prior cosmetic or various surgical procedures, burns, cleft lip etc. Some patients want to restore their beard completely but there are those who just want to achieve more fullness.
This is minimally invasive procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. The number of follicles depends on the density that patient wants to achieve but also on the size of the area so it varies from 500 to a few thousands.
Donor area is the same as in hair restoration which is the back side of the head (occipital area) because those hairs are almost the same in texture, color and quality as facial hairs and they are very easy to harvest. In some cases donor area can be other part of body such as chest, arms, legs, abdomen (body hair transplant) if there is inadequate donor area on the scalp. In order to harvest grafts, we use FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique which is the latest method in hair transplantation. Round punch of a small diameter (0.8 or 0.9) goes around every graft which is individually extracted. For beard restoration single and two hair grafts are used, same as in eyebrow restoration. Thereon, small incisions are made at the recipient site, at the areas we would like to fill with hairs. It is critical to make incisions in correct angle and direction of facial hair growth. Lastly, grafts are delicately implanted into these recipient sites. The procedure lasts around 3 to 5 hours and patient leaves the clinic the same day with a gaze only on the donor area which will be removed next day. No bandage is put on the face. Procedure is painless due to local anesthesia and no pain is experienced after the procedure. Transplanted hairs must be kept dry for a few days. Redness and crusts may remain for five to seven days.
Beard can be shaved again after seven days when sport activities may be resumed.
Transplanted hairs begin to grow as the procedure is done, but soon after (around two weeks later), they begin to fall out. They
begin to grow again at two to three months but in order to see final results, we need to wait six even nine months. The result of beard restoration is everlasting.
Facial hair restoration is a simple, efficient and minimally invasive procedure that can immensely improve the look of your beard, moustaches and sideburns
